Friday 8th July

Next week is Enterprise Week!

Year 2 are going to be making fashion items which they will be exhibiting in a fashion show with year 3 on Friday July 15th. We would really appreciate your help, not only through coming to the show, but also in helping to provide items to help the children with their creations.

Year 2 would like:

  • Old items of clothing (on the understanding they will not be return afterwards)
  • Buttons
  • Bottle tops
  • Material
  • Plastic bags
  • Yoghurt pots

Children are to be picked up at their normal time and then taken to the Junior school hall ready for the fashion show to start at 3.45. We will be asking next week which children would like to walk in the show and then check and confirm further details with you.

English: This week we will be writing a diary entry pretending to be Howard Carter discovering the tomb of Tutankhanmun.

 

Reading: This week we will be reading a range of diary entries looking at the layout and language used.

 

Maths: This week we are looking at positional language, for example forward, quarter turn and clockwise.

English: This week we will be linking this to our PSHE, namely focusing on the changes this term is leading up to. We will be writing about what have enjoyed, what we are looking forward to and writing letters to share our experiences with Year 1 (the soon to be Year 2!).

 

Reading: This week in reading we will be looking at some non-fiction texts about the Egyptians, focusing on Tutankhanmun. 

 

Maths: We will be exploring data handling, such as using surveys to make tally charts, pictograms and bar charts.

 

Topic:  We will be looking at the Egyptians and making headdresses.

Topic:  We will be looking at the Tudors, exploring who they were and learning about their lives.

Topic:  We will be looking at the time lines of key events in history and begin to explore different eras.

English: This week we will be writing animal booklets following our research last week.

 

Reading: This week in reading we will be looking at a selection of books and independently choosing texts based on our own interests.

 

Maths: We will be looking at estimating and partitioning numbers in different ways e.g. 63=60+3 or 50+13 etc.

 

Topic:  We will be looking at the food chains and how animals grow into adults.

This week is SATS week in Year 2.  We will be spreading the tests out over the wee as below:

- Thursday; Mathematical reasoning

 

Please ensure children are in school on time (by 8.45 if at all possible) so that they are settled before the tests start.  We appreciate your support at this important time for the children.

As part of our topic we will be creating habitats for animals.

If you could send in any shoe boxes or cereal boxes it would be much appreciated.

Topic:  We will be planting in the allotments, naming different kinds of plants and creating our own creatures for different habitats.

English: This week we will be looking at our trip to Chessington and begin to plan our recount of our trip.

 

Reading: This week in shared reading we will be continuing to read different recounts looking at the features of this text and key vocabulary.

 

Maths: We will be looking at the relationship between addition and subtraction. For example 5+2=7 and 7-2=5.

 

Topic:  We will be continuing to learn about different animals and their habitats and the different weather conditions they have.

English: This week we will be building word banks of key vocabulary linked to a recount.

 

Reading: This week in shared reading we will be reading a selection of recounts looking at the features of this text and key phrases.

 

Maths: We will be focusing on fractions, recapping fractions of shape and numbers and beginning to compare fractions e.g. 2/4 is equal to ½.

 

Topic:  We will be learning about habitats, discussing why living things live in particular habitats. We will also be looking at weather and the artist Henri Rousseau.

Maths: We will be focusing on shape, comparing the similarities and differences between 2D and 3D shapes.

 

Topic:  We will be learning about living and non-living things and exploring our school environment to find and sort objects into these categories. We will also be planning routes for the Beebots to move them around a grid.

Maths: We will be focusing on time. We will be recapping telling the time and will be moving onto sequencing events in order.

 

Topic: We will be continuing our science experiment about what plants need to grow. We will be exploring making our own music through 2Sequence. We will be using what we learnt from the illustrator’s visit last week to draw animals from The Enormous Crocodile.

Maths: We will be continuing to explore multiplication as repeated addition and comparing and sorting numbers. For example, odds and evens.

 

Topic: We will be starting a science experiment, looking at conditions plants need to grow and we will be using the iPads to create our own animations.

Maths: We will be using our knowledge of place value to subtract numbers, using both a numbered number line and moving onto a blank number line.

 

Topic: We will be completing a range of activities linked to the Nativity, including using musical instruments.

Bike It Breakfast

Earlswood Infant and Junior Schools would like to invite you to get in gear for our very special, family Bike It Breakfast. This will take place in the main hall at the Infant School on Tuesday 24th November.

From8.00 – 8.25am we will be offering a breakfast of croissants, pain au chocolat, fruit, juice, tea, coffee and hot chocolate to all parents, pupils and staff that cycle to school.

How do we join in?

  • IMPORTANT - To give us an idea of how many to cater for, please complete and return the slip attached to your child’s letter which they will be receiving today by Monday 23rd November.

English:  We will be continuing to write our own version of Jim and the Beanstalk, this time focusing on what happens when the main characters meet.

 

Reading: We will be reading a variety of short stories, thinking about using our own experiences to answer questions.

 

Maths: We will be using our knowledge of place value to add and subtract numbers, with a view to applying our knowledge to more complex numbers.

 

Topic: We will be continuing to use our design and technology skills to finish and evaluate our own interactive story, ensuring they are the best that they can be.

 

 

Mathletics: This week in maths the children have been working out fractions by counting in groups therefore this week’s Mathletics activities have been based on this.

Come and Learn Sessions

Come and Learn Sessions are an opportunity for you to see how we teach phonics. You will see the children practise their sounds, take part in phonics games (which you can join in with too!) and how we share texts with the children.

Reading: We will be reading the story Stone Soup focusing on the plot and comparing it to other similar stories.

 

Maths: We will be exploring pattern in shape and number, such as using physical resources to investigate patterns in twos and odd & even numbers.

 

Project: We will this week be storytelling, using the story Stone Soup. We will be completing range of different activities in order to develop our storytelling skills.  

 

Book Fair

‘Travelling Books’ are returning to the Infant School on Wednesday 7th October. The Book Fair was a huge success last year and we raised over £500 worth of book vouchers for the school.

 

There will be a large selection of books suitable for children aged 4-11 years old, at great prices, so please come and have a look on 7th, 8th and 9th October before and after school.

SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar): We will be learning about different sentence types, for example, questions, commands, statements and exclamations. We will be learning how to form these and how to punctuate them correctly.

 

Reading: We will be reading an interactive story about a journey to space. Year 2 will be making decisions within the story to change events, whilst thinking about the feelings of the characters. They will be locating specific information in response to questions.

 

Maths: We will be learning about subtraction. We will be using both one digit and two digit numbers and using concrete objects to support mental strategies. 

 

Project: We will be creating and showing our own presentations linked to the model planets we made last week.

Please can you ensure you are signing the orange reading records every time you hear your child read.

Week beginning 21st September

SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar): We will be learning about punctuation.  E.g, capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks. We will use punctuation in our writing about our favourite planet.

 

Reading: We will be using non-fiction texts,  focusing on the use of the contents and index pages in order to locate pages of interest.

 

Maths: We will be learning about place value and ordering numbers. 

 

Project: We will be making models of the planets in our Solar System using the knowledge we have gathered during our project work so far.

 

Reminders:

Please can you ensure your child has wellington boots and a coat in school.

Week beginning 14th September

 

SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar): We will continue to learn about adjectives, verbs and adverbs. We will be writing our own Space poems.

 

Reading: We will be looking at non-fiction texts about Space. We will be focusing on the layout of non-fiction texts.

 

Maths: We will be learning to add using one and two digit numbers. The children will use equipment and recording their workings.

                                                                          

Project: We will be continuing to learn about different planets in the Solar System, using our facts from last week to create a poster or leaflet.

 

Reminders:

Homework started today. There are spellings and Mathletics activities for the children to complete. Mathletics logins are in the front of the reading records.

 

Please can you ensure your child has wellington boots in school.

Reading Books

We will be sending home reading records on Thursday with their new reading books.

Reading books will then be changed every Thursday.

 

Children will be able to select a book from the book racks in their classrooms from Monday and these can be changed every day when the children have read them.

Week beginning 7th September

 

SPAG(Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar): We will be learning about adjectives, verbs and adverbs, we will be writing descriptive sentences about Space.

 

Reading: We will be looking at fiction texts set in Space. We will be focusing on the use of language and comparing books by the same author.

 

Maths: We will be looking at place value. We will be exploring tens and units and adding ten to a number.

 

Project: We will be learning about the different planets in the Solar System, finding out facts and using our art skills to create pictures of the planets.

 

Reminders: We will be having Skills Day every Tuesday; you will need to wear PE kit on this day.

Our PE Days will be Thursday and Friday, please ensure you are in PE Kit for these days.
