Reading: Next week we will look at different texts to help us figure out characters' motives and actions. We will interpret why a character has done or might choose to do something.

Reminders: The children have received a purple letter about our trip to the Observatory on 17th November. Please return the slip by 3rd November. It promises to be a hugely exciting and educational trip to go alongside our next topic of 'Space'.

Also, the children have been sent home with a 'times tables' sheet. This is a new way to help and encourage the children to work on their times tables. All details are on the sheet (please ask if you need a new one) and most of it will take place in school. If the children could do some times tables revision at home it would be really beneficial.

The Year 5 Team

Reading: Next week we focus on the difference between a fact and an opinion. We will look at how a fact can be proven or based on evidence where as an opinion is a thought or view.

Reminders: Year 5/6 Halloween disco is from 6-7pm Friday 16th October. £2 entry on the door, sweets 50p and glow stick £1. Please feel free to dress up as a spooky character (this is optional).

Reading: Next week's focus is inference (thinking beyond the literal information given) and deduction (developing an understanding based on evidence in the text). We will answer questions based on different texts.

The Year 5 Team

Week beginning 28th September

Reading:   We will be looking at making predictions, we will look at the front covers of books, the blurb and extracts of text to help us decide what we think might happen.

Maths: We are looking at fractions, this will include finding equivalent fractions (e.g. 1/2 is the same as 4/8), looking at mixed number fractions (4 1/4) and improper fractions (8/2). The children will be converting between mixed number fractions and improper fractions.

SPaG:  We are going to look at how to use adverbs to extend our sentences. For example, The boy walked to the park. Adding an adverb (an adverb describes a verb) could make the sentence - the boy walked quickly to the park.

Reminders: Please can we have spare socks for PE as we have been on the field. We will be heading to the woodlands on Friday so you may wish to bring in wellies.

The Year 5 Team

Week beginning 21st September

Maths: next week we will be focusing on multiplication, we will look into mental methods for multiplication and applying our times tables to help solve problems.

SPAG: we will spend next week looking at apostrophes. We will be focusing on when apostrophes are used for possession, i.e. The dog's bowl is full of food (the bowl belongs to the dog so an apostrophe is needed).

Reading: next week will focus on characters and their feelings. We will look at empathizing with characters and explaining their thoughts and feelings. We will use clues in the text as well as pictures to help support our ideas.

The Year 5 Team.

Week beginning 7th September

We have had a fantastic start to Year 5, it was wonderful to hear all the stories about the summer holidays from the children. A big thank you for making the effort to send your children in with the correct uniform - they all look very smart.

This week we will be looking at:

SPAG(Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar): We will be recapping the use of capital letters and full-stops. It is always surprising how many children forget this in their independent work. It is imperative to instinctively use these so that the children's work can be marked to their full potential.

Reading: We will be looking at reading comprehensions and skimming and scanning texts. Skimming and scanning is an important skill to help find the relevant information quickly and efficiently.

Maths: We will be looking at place value. We will be identifying the value of each digit in a number and using this knowledge to create different sized integers. Integers are whole numbers.

Project: We will be learning about Antarctica. We will be fact-finding, map reading and beginning to learn about the history of Antarctica (with a focus on the race to the pole).

Reminders: Our skills day this year will be on Friday, PE days are Tuesday and Thursday, but we expect children to bring in their PE kits on Monday and take them home on Friday. If the weather looks poor then please send your child in with a coat.
