This Week's Learning

Autumn 2: Week 1 - Week Beginning 2.11.20

 

EnglishThis week we will be starting a brand new piece of writing, based around an Antarctic explorer searching for a lost companion.

 

ReadingWe will be starting our new text Holes and we will begin by using our prediction skills to think about what is going to happen in the story.

 

MathsThis week we will be doing work on fractions. We will start by looking at equivalent fractions before moving on to simplifying and ordering fractions.

 

TopicThis half term our topic is called Antarctic Lands & Desert Sands. To begin with, we will be introduced to the continent of Antarctica and look at two of its most famous explorers: Robert Scott and Roald Amundsen.

Week 7 - Week Beginning 19.10.20

 

EnglishThis week we will be finishing our  letter from Charles Darwin to the British Museum before moving onto to writing our own persuasive letter with the focus being on our new, junior library!

 

ReadingWe will finish Stormbreaker  and this week we will be looking at summarising the whole text and looking back at earlier predictions we made.

 

MathsThis week we will be doing work on mental problem solving strategies before moving onto BIDMAS.

 

TopicThis week our PBL will all be focused around sculpture week and we will be looking to add Darwin influences into our pieces.

Week 6 - Week Beginning 12.10.20

 

EnglishThis week we will be writing our own persuasive letter from Charles Darwin to the British Museum.

 

ReadingWe will continue with Stormbreaker  and this week we will be using our vocabulary skills to identify the author's use of language for effect.

 

MathsThis week we will be doing work on factors and multiples.

 

TopicThis week we will be imitating Darwin by doing some still life sketching.

Week 5 - Week Beginning 5.10.20

 

EnglishThis week we will begin a new piece of writing based on a persuasive letter from Charles Darwin to the British Museum.

 

ReadingWe will continue with Stormbreaker  and this week we will be using our inference skills to analyse characters throughout the book.

 

MathsThis week we will be doing work on the formal methods of division. 

 

TopicThis week we will be doing a write up of our strawberry DNA experiment before moving on to imagining how a human could adapt to different environments in the future.

Week 4 - Week Beginning 28.9.20

 

EnglishThis week we will continue to focus our writing around the travels of Charles Darwin. For this week, we will be imagining that he is writing a persuasive letter to the British Museum asking for further funding based on his findings.

 

ReadingWe will continue with Stormbreaker  and this week we will be using our comprehension skills to formulate answers to questions requiring more detailed answers.

 

MathsThis week we will be doing work on the formal methods of multiplication.

 

TopicThis week we will take a more in-depth look at Gregor Mendel and his work on genetics, including extracting DNA from a strawberry!

Week 3 - Week Beginning 21.9.20

 

EnglishThis week we will be writing our own piece of writing based on Charles Darwin discovering a *new* creature during his 5 year voyage aboard The Beagle.

 

ReadingWe will continue with Stormbreaker  and this week we will be using our vocabulary skills to identify new and unknown language.

 

MathsThis week we will be doing work on the formal methods of addition and subtraction.

 

TopicThis week we will take a more in-depth look at Carl Linnaeus and how his work impacted the classification of species across the world.

Week Beginning 14.9.20

 

EnglishThis week we will begin planning our own piece of writing based on Charles Darwin discovering a *new* creature during his 5 year voyage aboard The Beagle.

 

ReadingWe will continue with Stormbreaker  and this week we will be using our inference skills to unpick some of the early mysteries in the book.

 

MathsThis week we will continue doing tasks based around place value. We will be rounding numbers up to 10 million before moving onto negative numbers.

 

Topic- This week we will take a more in-depth look at Darwin's theory of natural selection and how animals & plants have adapted to survive and thrive in different environments.

Week Beginning 7.9.20

 

EnglishThis week we will begin our first piece of writing which will be based around an explorer discovering new creatures in a distant land. We will be looking at unfamiliar vocabulary in our model text and identifying grammatical features that have been used to enhance description.

 

ReadingWe will introduce our new book- Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz. Based around the adventures of teenage spy Alex Rider, we will be using our prediction skills to think about what could happen in the story over the coming weeks.

 

MathsThis week we will doing tasks based around place value. We will be comparing, ordering and rounding numbers up to 10 million.

 

TopicWe will begin our new topic: Darwin's Delights. We will be introducing Charles Darwin and his important discoveries before moving onto some Darwin-themed art.
