In addition to your child’s weekly reading book you will be able to access the Rising Stars online e-library on a tablet or computer. This is an additional collection of online books that will match your child’s reading level. At the end of each book we would like your child to complete the reading quiz independently as this will let their teacher know that you have completed the book. You can access this through your child’s Wonde log in
In year 1 we absolutely love to read and we enjoy listening to and sharing stories with the children.
We would like for you to continue to complete your daily reads. On a Friday we will send home word lists that will focus on the current phonics sounds Year 1 are learning please could you have a go at dotting the single sounds and drawing a line under any digraphs or trigraphs.
We will be sending fish words home for Year 1, these are part of the children's 100 high frequency words to learn. Please see below for some ideas of activities you can complete with your child.
Your child will be bringing home ‘fish words’. These are high frequency words, which your child needs to be able to instantly recognise by sight, to help their reading. As your child recognises the word they can colour it in on the fish. When the fish is complete, please bring the sheet back to allow us to assess your child. We can then send home the next fish sheet.
Please cut out the six words underneath the fish to keep at home and continue to practise with your child.
Here are a few activities, which you could do to support your child’s high frequency word recognition.
Shout out loud
Use the word cards. Spread the cards out face down. Take it in turns to turn over one card at a time. The first person to shout the word out loud wins the card. Keep going until all the cards have been won.
You can play this with silly voices. Before you turn over a card you have to decide what sort of voice you have to use to say the word e.g. whisper the word, say it like a gorilla, roar it like a lion, squeak it like a mouse.
Hunt the words
Using the word cards, hide a number of them around a room (your child must not look). The child has to find the cards and bring them back to you saying the words as they find them.
I’m thinking of a word
Pick a word but don’t tell your child which word you are thinking of. Say “I’m thinking of a word, the word begins with…..” The child has to guess what the word might be from the ones spread out. If they guess correctly they can keep the card. If they can’t guess then give them another clue “I am thinking of a word that has ……sounds” or “…..ends with…..” Keep giving clues until they guess the word.
Hold up the word, if your child can read it
Ask your child to take a card. If they can’t read the word put it to the back of the pile so they can come back to it at the end.
With words children are becoming more familiar with set them a speed challenge. How quickly can they say all the words as you show them each card in turn? Remember to muddle up the words regularly so that they don’t just remember the sequence of words you are showing them.
Phonics is a very important part of our learning in Year 1. We learn tricky words, these are words which are not decodable using phonics and we learn to read them by sight. Here are the tricky words we will be learning throughout this year.
