This Week's Learning

Week beginning 16.5.22 

 

Writing- We are writing our own poems including descriptive language like similes and expanded noun phrases. 

 

Reading- We will finish our class book Stig of the Dump by Clive King. We will complete a book review.

 

Maths- We will be continuing our learning about time. We will read time on an analogue and digital clock. We will read the 24 hour clock. We will work out the duration of events by counting on and back in hours and minutes

 

PE

We will be preparing for sports day with athletics activities. 

 

PSHE- We are thinking about how different families are made up. We will think about how we appreciate our families.

Our sports day is on Thursday. We are looking forwards to seeing you for the events and the picnic after. Please provide a packed lunch for your child.

 

Jubilee Picnic

On Friday we will be celebrating the Queen's Jubilee with a whole school picnic on the field. Please provide a packed lunch for your child.

Art Project

Later on in the Summer Term we are going to be completing an eco art project. Please start collecting bottle tops! Milk bottle tops are best but all bottle tops of all colours are needed. Please collect a bag full before sending them in. Thank you.

Reading- We are continuing to read Stig of the Dump by Clive King. We will look at True or False questions and characters feelings. 

 

Maths- We will be starting our learning about time. We will use analogue and digital clocks to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes, then the nearest minute. 

 

PSHE- We are thinking our wants and needs. We will think about if our wants and needs are the same as children around the world or if they differ.  

 

RE- We are looking at the religion of Judaism. We will look at how a synagogue can help us understand the Jewish faith. 

 

History- We will learn about how people lived in the Stone Age and the Bronze Age on our trip to Butser Ancient Farm.

Trip- Thursday 19th May 

Thank you for your offers of help. We had more than enough helpers in the end. Please check with your child's class teacher if you are unsure if your help is needed. There are limited spaces on the coaches. If you are joining us, don't forget to bring yourself a packed lunch. There are hot drinks available to buy from the shop at Butser. 

 

On our trip day we are hoping to leave promptly at 8.55am. Please ensure your child is in school at 8.30. We will register the children and get on the coaches at 8.45. The children will need to bring their packed lunch in either a plastic bag or backpack. They will need to bring a named water bottle. If the weather is not dry they will need waterproof coat and can wear wellies, as we will be outside for most of the day. If this is the case, please send a spare pair of shoes to wear on the coach so it doesn't get the coaches muddy. There will be a space inside for the children to leave their belongings for the day.

Maths- We will be starting our learning about time. We will identify o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to times on an analogue clock. 

 

PSHE- We are thinking about global relationships, focussing on where our food comes from and the journey it has to take and the impact of this. 

 

Computing- We are starting our learning about stop motion animation. We will create the 'set' for our animation.

 

Art- We will complete our cave paintings and the silhouette picture of Stone-Henge.

Reading- We are continuing to read Stig of the Dump by Clive King. We will look at the vocabulary used in the text and summarise what we have read.  

 

Maths- We will be comparing, ordering, adding and subtracting fractions. 

 

PSHE- We are thinking about online friendships and how we keep ourselves safe online. 

 

History- We will think about the Neolithic period and look at stone circles. We will create a picture of stone circles in Art.

Writing- We are learning a narrative journey story. We will look at the features of the story including prepositions and show not tell to describe how a character is feeling. 

 

Reading- We have started to read Stig of the Dump by Clive King. We will retrieve information from the text.   

 

Maths- We will find fractions of amounts. We will look at unit fractions and non-unit fractions. We will compare fractions using a fraction wall. 

 

PSHE- We are thinking about friendship and how we can be a good friend. 

 

History- We will think about the job of an archaeologist. We will find out about the Neolithic period in the Stone-Age.

This half term has been great. Over the last 2 weeks the children have really enjoyed their swimming sessions and all of them have made great progress with this. They have also been working really hard during our STEM weeks, learning about plant growth. 

 

Trip to Butser Ancient Farm

You will have received an email about our trip not having enough donations to go ahead. Please use Scopay to pay for this if you are able. If you are not able to pay, please speak to the office and they will be able to help you.  

 

New learning

After the holidays our theme will be Stone-Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. This will cover the whole Summer Term. We will have a dress up day in the second half of the Summer Term (after May Bank holidays). More details will be available about this nearer the time.

PSHE- We are thinking about how we stay safe and healthy. We will think about our fitness goals. 

 

Science- We will be completing some investigations based on our Science topic Growth and Plants. This will be part of STEM week for Year 3. 

 

PE- Swimming- 3P and 3E will be doing their swimming lessons each afternoon this week. 3K and 3G will have a PE session in school on Thursday. 

 

Computing- We will use purple mash to do some more graphing.

Maths- We will learning what perimeter is and calculate the perimeter of simple shapes. 

 

PSHE- We are thinking about how we stay safe. We will look at some scenarios and decide how we can keep ourselves safe. 

 

Science- We will be completing some investigations based on our Science topic Growth and Plants. This will be part of STEM week for Year 3.

Steps to Wellbeing Wisdom - Wednesday 16th March 

 

As part of our ongoing work to support the children with their mental health, year 3 will be taking part in a wellbeing workshop with Openview Education. Openview Education deliver theatre based workshops with an aim to empower students with the skills, knowledge and confidence that they need to stay safe and live successful, happy lives. 

 

During the ‘Steps to Wellbeing Wisdom’ workshop, the children will learn simple self-care techniques, helping them to build resilience and boost their wellbeing. The children will take part in role-play scenarios, allowing them to practice how they can access support and what they can do if they have concerns about someone else’s mental health.

Writing- We are writing our own suspense tale at the beginning of the week. 

 

Reading- We will continue our story of Oliver and the Seawigs. We will explaining what we have read and summarising key events. 

 

Maths- We will learning what perimeter is and calculate the perimeter of simple shapes. 

 

PSHE- We are thinking about how we stay safe. We will think about what to do if we are feeling unsafe. 

 

Art- We will create our own picture in the style of Monet. 

 

Cooking Skills- We will be making egg muffins. 

 

Science- we will be learning about the importance of plants, germination, pollination and seed dispersal.

Please come and buy a book at the book fair. It is open from 8.30-9.00 and 3.30-4.00 Monday to Thursday next week.

Week beginning 7.3.22 

 

Writing- We are continuing to write our own suspense story. Linking the end with the beginning. 

 

Reading- We will continue our story of Oliver and the Seawigs. We will complete tasks on inference and retrieve information. 

 

Maths- We will be adding and subtracting lengths in metres, centimetres and millimetres. 

 

PSHE- We are thinking about our attitude to drugs. This will include medicines that a doctor might give you and eating things that might be unsafe if you don't know what they are, (for example finding a bag of 'sweets')

 

Art- We will look at the artist Monet and think about how impressionist painters created their work. 

 

Cooking Skills- We will be making mayonnaise. If you want to have some, please send in a suitable container for sending it home. (If it works!)

Do you have a book that you are finished with? Do you think someone else would enjoy reading it? Then please bring it to our classroom next week. You can then choose a book from the book swap shed outside 3E later in the week. Please note that the book you bring will not be returned to you.

Wednesday is an INSET day and school will be closed to children.

Geography- We are learning about Europe and its location in the world. We will look mountains, rivers and the water cycle.

This week has been Children's Mental Health Week. It has been great to share some activities with the children that they can do to support their mental health. There is more information on the website that you are able to access. Please talk to your children about some of the techniques they have learnt and the activities that they have done that support their mental health. 

 

Next Half Term our theme will be Europe. We will look at the physical features of river and mountains and also cover the water cycle.  Our topic in Science is plants and this will link with our learning in STEM week at the end of the half term.

This week is Children's Mental Health Week. We will be doing some activities to support good mental health, throughout the week. 

 

Writing- We are writing our own portal story. We will include speech between the characters.   

 

Reading- We are finishing our class book 'The Firework Makers Daughter' by Philip Pullman. We will complete a review of the book.

 

Maths- We learning about statistics. We will look at how data is organised in pictograms, bar charts and tables and interpret it. 

 

Science- We are learning about soil and what it is made up of. We will look at some soil samples. We will learn how fossils are formed.  

 

Computing- It is safer internet day on Tuesday. We will be thinking about how to keep safe on the internet and having a special assembly.

Writing- We are learning how to punctuate speech correctly and add reporting clauses.  

 

Reading- We are continuing our class book 'The Firework Makers Daughter' by Philip Pullman. We will think about the action and the choices of language used to describe it. 

 

Maths- We are adding and subtracting money and giving change. 

 

Geography- We are learning about volcanoes. We will think about why and how people live safely near to where natural disasters happen. We will think about the problems they might overcome. 

 

Outdoor Learning- We will be going to the woodlands this week to create our own 'villages' around a volcano. We will set off our 'volcano' and see what survives. 

 

Computing- We will continue our unit of work on coding. We will complete some challenges on purple mash.

Reading- We are continuing our class book 'The Firework Makers Daughter' by Philip Pullman. We will think about the vocabulary in the story. 

 

Maths- We are completing a quiz to see what we can remember about all the learning we have done on multiplication and division. We will start our learning about money by counting up in pounds and pence, and identifying amounts. 

 

Geography- We are learning about natural disasters and how they change the environment. This will include earthquakes; thinking about tectonics plates and volcanoes; where we will learn about the different types on our planet. 

 

Outdoor Learning- We will be going to the woodlands this week to investigate the soil and what we can find in a set area. We will dig carefully and observe what we find. 

 

Computing- We will continue our unit of work on coding. We will complete some challenges on purple mash.

Writing- We will finish writing our innovated report and plan and write our own newspaper report using the features that we have learnt. 

 

Reading- We are continuing our class book 'The Firework Makers Daughter' by Philip Pullman. We will think about how action is described and summarise main events.

 

Maths- We are dividing a 2 digit number by a 1 digit number using place value counters to split the tens and the ones. We will complete some problem solving with multiplication and division. 

 

RE- We are learning about how people celebrate new life. We will look at how people of different religions celebrate new life. As part of this learning we will think about our own names. 

Children are invited to share any of their own story with the class.  This might be why they are called what they are, or what their name means.  It might also include information about any ceremony they had, or how they were welcomed into their family.

 

Outdoor Learning- We will be going to the woodlands this week to investigate and sort rocks that we can find. We will also use our story telling skills, imagining what the stone may be. We will attempt to build cairns. 

 

Computing- We will continue our unit of work on coding. We will complete some challenges on purple mash.

It has been a great week back after the holiday. We are excited to start our new term with the theme 'Geology Rocks!'

 

Writing- We will learn a text Red Riding Hood in the style of a newspaper report. We will be looking at the features of newspaper reports and we will begin to write our own newspaper report. 

 

Reading- We are continuing our new class book 'The Firework Makers Daughter' by Philip Pullman. We will retrieve information from the text.

 

Maths- We are continuing to multiply a 2 digit number by a 1 digit number. We will also look at dividing this week. 

 

Art- We are finding out about the artist Katsushika Hokusai. We will re-create his print of The Great Wave. 

 

Computing- We will start our unit of work on coding. We will make a simple programme following a flowchart using purple mash.

In the New Year our topic will be Geology Rocks! We will learn about Rocks and soils in our Science and physical features such as mountains and rivers in Geography.

Writing- We will be reading a newspaper report and looking at the features that are used to write one. 

 

Reading- We are starting our new class book 'The Firework Makers Daughter' by Philip Pullman. We will make predictions and find out about the main characters. 

 

Maths- We are learning to multiply a 2 digit number by a 1 digit number. We will do this using place value counters and a formal written method. 

 

Science- We will look at how rocks are formed and how they are different. We will investigate the properties of different rocks. 

 

Computing- We will start our unit of work on coding. We will make a simple programme using purple mash.

It has been a busy but very enjoyable half term. The children have been amazing and it has been great to see them enjoying some festive activities this week.

Week Beginning 13.12.21

 

Learning this week 

 

English- This week we are writing our own instructions using all of the toolkit we have looked at including imperative verbs. 

 

Maths- We will be continuing our learning on multiplication and division. We will be looking at multiples of 4 and 8

 

Reading- We have finished out class book- The Beasts of Olympus- Beast Keeper. We will review it. 

 

Computing-  We will create our own branching database, thinking about the yes/no questions we need to use.

 

Science- We will learn about magnetic poles. We will be using the vocabulary attract and repel to describe magnetic forces. We will have a quiz to see what we know about magnets and forces. 

 

RE- We will think about the Nativity story and why we give presents at Christmas.

The children did really well at class assemblies this week. We were all really proud of them. There will be a recording on Google classrooms by the end of term. 

 

Christmas Cards- If you are writing Christmas cards, there will be a post box in the Year 3 corridor to put them in from Monday. Please make sure the name and class are on the envelope. On Google classroom you will find class lists for all of the children in Year 3

 

Please note that because the hall is being used for assemblies, we will only have PE outside on Wednesdays until the end of this term (weather permitting).

 

On Friday 17th December Year 3 will have the opportunity to watch an online panto and play some party games. If your child wants to bring in a cushion to sit on during the panto they can. The children can wear party clothes on this day

 

 

 

Week Beginning 6.12.21

 

Learning this week 

 

English- This week we are learning an instruction text. We will look at the main features of instructions

 

Maths- We will be continuing our learning on multiplication and division. We will be looking at multiples of 3 and 4

 

Reading- We will continue our class book- The Beasts of Olympus- Beast Keeper. We will predict the next events in the story. 

 

DT- We will evaluate our DT project

 

Computing-  We will continue to learn the skills we need to create a branching database, thinking about the yes/no questions we need to use.

 

Science- We will learn about forces and think about how different surfaces change movement. We will find out which materials are attracted to a magnet.

The children have created some great decorations as part of Christmas making morning. They are currently decorating our classroom but will be sent home at the end of this term. 

 

Our class assemblies are on Wednesday. Please remember if you are attending, it is one adult per child and please wear a mask. A recording of the performance will be available on Google Classroom by the end of the term.

Christmas Cards- If you are writing Christmas cards, there will be a post box in the Year 3 corridor to put them in from Monday. Please make sure the name and class are on the envelope. On Google classroom you will find class lists for all of the children in Year 3

 

Please note that because the hall is being used for assemblies, we will only have PE outside on Wednesdays until the end of this term (weather permitting).

 

Parent present wrapping is happening over the next 2 weeks. Each year group will be doing this on different days. If a sibling has already done this please don't worry, Year 3 will have their turn before we break up for the holidays. 

 

 

Week Beginning 29.11.21

 

The children loved Greek day and it was lovely to see them all dressed up and enjoying the activities. 

 

Learning this week 

 

English- This week we will write our own wishing tale. We will focus on describing the character really well.

 

Maths- We will be continuing our learning on multiplication and division. We will be sharing amounts into equal groups and revising the 2 and 5 timestables. 

 

Reading- We will continue our class book- The Beasts of Olympus- Beast Keeper. We will look at how the characters actions help us to know something about them. 

 

DT- We will start our DT project looking at levers and linkages. We will think about loose and fixed pivots. 

 

Computing-  We will create a branching database, thinking about the yes/no questions we need to use.

 

Christmas Making morning- The children will make some festive decorations that they will bring home at the end of the term.

Thank you for the cereal boxes. We will be using them next week. If you have any more you might want to get rid of please send in on Monday.

Learning this week 

 

English- This week we are continuing to write our own wishing tale . We will focus on linking the beginning and ending of the story. 

 

Maths- We will be starting our learning on multiplication and division. We will use arrays to work out calculations. 

 

Reading- We will continue our class book- The Beasts of Olympus- Beast Keeper. We will summarise information and find key information in the text. 

 

History- We will learn about how we know about Ancient Greek civilisation.

 

Art- We will make a Greek pot using the pinch technique. 

 

Greek Day- We will learn about Greek architecture alongside cooking, drama and art activities.

Learning this week 

 

English- This week we are beginning to write our own wishing tale . We will focus on making the description of our main character really detailed. 

 

Maths- We will be using the column method to subtract 3 digit numbers including crossing ones and tens. 

 

Reading- We will continue our new class book- The Beasts of Olympus- Beast Keeper. We will retrieve information from the text and look at language choices. 

 

History- We will learn about how theatre was important to the Ancient Greeks and look at the legacy that they left us. 

 

PSHE- This week is anti-bullying week. Our PSHE lesson will focus on identifying what bullying is and how we report it. As part of the National campaign, we will be taking part in Odd Socks Day on Monday 15th and thinking about how we use kind words under the theme 'One Kind Word'

Learning this week 

It is assessment week. The children will be completing some formal assessments in reading and maths. 

 

English- This week we are looking at character description in our wishing tale- King Midas. We will look at how to punctuate direct speech. 

 

Maths- We will be using column method to add 3 digit numbers including crossing ones and tens. 

 

Reading- We will continue our new class book- The Beasts of Olympus- Beast Keeper. We will look at how the characters are described. 

 

RE- We will learn about Sikhs and why equality is important to them. 

 

History-  We will look at Ancient Greek society and how it was different in different city states. We will compare Athens and Sparta. We will think about how we have evidence about this ancient civilisation.

Learning this week 

 

English- This week we will be writing our own warning tale. We will use all of the features of our toolkit to make sure the setting is described really well. 

 

Maths- We will be continuing to use mental  and written strategies, including the column method, to add and subtract including bridging 10 and 100. 

 

Reading- We will complete a book review of the stories that we have read in The Akimbo Adventures. 

 

Design Technology- We will evaluate our product and think about the strengths and weaknesses of our design. 

 

RE- We will look at why Christians call God father and think about the names that Christians give God.  

 

Spellings

Spelling are set on Purple Mash each week. This week we will test the children on some of the words they have learnt this half term. All of the word lists can be found on the homework tab.

Sculpture Week

After half term we will be having an exciting sculpture week. Year 3 will be looking at the artist Barbara Hepworth. As part of this week, we will make salt dough apertures and carve a soap into our own sculpture. 

If you have any out of date flour that could be used in the salt dough, please send it in to school. Please send in at least 1 bar of soap that we can sculpt. 

 

 

This half term has gone so quickly! The children have settled in really well to Year 3. We are looking forward to seeing you at parents evening after the half term break.

Reading- We will look at action in the story and think about how characters are feeling. 

 

Design Technology- We will continue with our textiles project and make design decisions before creating our final product. 

 

Art- We will look at Adinkra designs and create own own patterns.

Learning this week 

 

English- This week we will be learning the story of 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf'. We will look at how the setting is described at the beginning of the story. 

 

Maths- We will be continuing to use mental strategies to add and subtract including bridging 10 and 100. 

 

Reading- We will look at the vocabulary in the book and order key events. 

 

Science- We will complete a quiz to see what we have learnt.    

 

Design Technology- We will start our textiles project where we will look at apron designs and make choices about what our own apron will look like. We will learn some stitches. 

 

PSHE- This week is 'Feel Good' week. We will think about how working together makes us stronger.

Uniform

If your child has long hair, please make sure it is tied up at school.

Children should not be wearing jewellery to school and earrings, including studs, should be removed on PE days.

Learning this week 

 

English- This week we will be writing about a predator that we have created. We will use all of the skills that we have learnt including conjunctions, expanded noun phrases and power of three. 

 

Maths- We will be completing a quiz about place value and begin to learn adding and subtracting using practical equipment.  

 

Reading- We are continuing our class book 'Akimbo's adventures'. We will look at the next story in the collection and make predictions now that we know something about the characters.

 

Science- We will learn about skeletons and muscles and what their job are in our bodies.   

 

Computing- We are continuing to look at keeping safe online.

Please encourage your child to read everyday and record this in their reading record. Reading records should be in school every day. It is great to see Book Bingo challenges starting to be completed. If you are stuck on a book, please let us know and we will try to help. Our local libraries are also very happy to help. If you take your book bingo card into them, they will be able to give recommendations. 

 

Names in clothes

We will try to help if clothes are lost at school but this is impossible when they are not named. It is a good idea to put the class name too but even the children's initials make finding things easier!

 

Sewing

Next week (and for the next couple of weeks) we are embarking on a 'Design Project' that involves every child sewing. If you have any scraps of material that they can practice on or use as a pocket then please send them in.

English- This week we will be writing our own non-fiction report about a predator. We will focus on sentence starters and conjunctions

 

Maths- We will compare values of objects and numbers. We will add and subtract 1, 10 and 100 to numbers

 

Reading- We are continue our class book 'Akimbo and the Lion'. We will look at the action in the story.

 

Art- We will be looking at Adinkra Design and creating our own artwork. 

 

Science- We will learn how living things get their food and what a balanced diet looks like. We will know what a herbivore, carnivore and omnivore are.

It has great week and the children enjoyed investigating a mysterious visitor in our block. The children have been really sensible with new routines like changing for PE and collecting their own lunch from the cooks.  

 

Learning this week 

 

English- This week we will be continuing to learn our non-fiction text about lions. We will focus on grammar features like conjunctions, verbs and the layout of an information report. 

 

Maths- We will continue our learning about place value. We will be placing numbers on a numberline to 100 and we will compare objects and numbers. 

 

Reading- We are continue our class book 'Akimbo and the Lion'. We will look at how settings are described and make inferences about a character's actions. 

 

Art- We will be looking at the Artist Esther Malungu and think about the patterns that she created. 

 

Geography- We will learn about where the equator is and learn vocabulary Northern and Southern Hemisphere. 

 

Computing- We we learn about online safety and think about how we keep our personal information safe.

We have had a great first 2 days in Year 3. All of the children have settled in really well.

 

Learning this week 

 

English- This week we will be starting to learn our new text. We are learning a non-fiction text about Lions. 

 

Maths- We will continue our learning about place value. We look look at numbers with hundreds, tens and ones and think about the value of each digit. 

 

Reading- We are starting our class book 'Akimbo and the Lion'. We will make predictions and look at the main characters in the story. 

 

Art- We are going to be sketching and thinking about how to make improvements to our work.

 

Science- We will think about how we know that an animal is a predator. 

 

We will also be looking out to see if there are any predators around our school.

Welcome to Year 3!

 

We are really excited to welcome you to Year 3 and looking forward to seeing you this week.

 

For the first 2 days we will be doing some reading, writing and maths. We will also talk about how we are feeling about Year 3 in our PSHE lessons. We are also looking at the artist Frank Bowling and you will have received an additional e-mail about this. 

 

Year 3 have PE on Wednesday and Thursday.
Wednesday will be outside on the field or playground. Thursday will be a session inside, in the hall.

 

Our woodlands day will usually be a Monday but please make sure your child has wellies everyday, in a bag that can be on their peg. 

 

We will have our music session with Mr Scullin on Tuesdays.
