Year 5 & 6

Juniors Sports Day - Thursday 26th May 2022

All parents and carers please join us for a fun filled sports day!

Location: Earlswood Junior School Field

Time: 12.35-14.45 

There will be a picnic lunch starting at 11.40 to 12.20 beforehand if you wish to join your child for lunch.

The entrance for parents and carers will be via the top main entrance for the junior site. You will be asked to sign in when you arrive at the gate and if you are unsure there will be members of staff to help direct you to the activity your child will be starting on first. Please be patient, we will aim to sign you in as quickly as possible.

As much enthusiasm and encouragement not only for your child but the whole colour team would be fantastic!

See you there on what will hopefully be a bright and sunny day!

Cooking

We are cooking this week.

If there are any changes to your child's dietary needs/allergies, please update this information at the school office.

 

We made Smoked Joloff rice with plantain in our food and nutrition lesson.

Here is the recipe:

Method

Step 1 –

Place the rice in a pan of water. Bring to the boil and par-boil for 5 minutes until the rice is almost cooked. Then drain in a sieve, rinse and set aside.

 

 

 

Step 2 –

Roughly chop the pepper and red onion.

Place in a bowl with the tomatoes and garlic.

Blend until smooth with the help of an adult.

 

Step 3 –

Finely slice the onion.

Heat the oil in a pan.

Add the onion and bay leaves.

Cook on a medium heat for 8 minutes until the onion is soft.

 

Step 4 –

Add the spices (cayenne pepper, smoked paprika, ground cumin) to the mix in the pan.

Add the sea salt. Cook for a few more minutes.

Add the tomato puree and cook for 1-2 mins.

 

Step 5 –

Add the tomato and pepper mix (made by Group 2) to the pan.

Add the semi-cooked rice (from Group 1)

Mix thoroughly so that the rice is fully coated.

Add a dash of water, turn down the heat, stir and cover with a lid for 5-10 minutes until cooked through.

 

Step 6 –

Peel the plantains and slice in 1cm slices.

Heat the oil in a pan until hot.

Fry for a few minutes, turning occasionally, until soft and cooked. Serve with the rice.

We will be carrying out another 'Whole School TTRS Competition' this year for the children in Years 2-6 to compete in! The battles will commence on the week beginning Monday 20th March. One child from each class will be selected to compete in the tournament for their class. Children will be decided based on who has played on TTRS the most this year so far. The rest of the class members will cheer on their classmates from the audience

Homework

Your child will have received a paper copy of the Maths and Reading homework which will be marked in class,

It will not be posted on google classroom.

Please remind them to complete their homework and return it to school by Friday morning at the latest.

We really enjoyed our Rainforest Experience day

We created some wonderful Rainforest performances and really enjoyed finding out about the Borneo rainforest and the orangutans. We created some amazing artwork using pastel colours and the inspiration of John Dyer and the Last Chance to Paint website.

On Wednesday the 11th January we will have a rainforest workshop. We will also be completing an art focus through a rainforest webinar with an artist. 

We are inviting your child to come to school wearing a colour of a rainforest plant or animal.

We will complete our work on the Plague with our Plague day on 30th November. We are inviting you to dress up for the day.

Children in Need - Friday 18th November  

 

On Friday 18th November, we ask that children and staff wear something spotty to celebrate Children in Need. Winter

Now that we are heading towards winter, please ensure your children brings a coat each day.

We recommend bringing a spare pair of sock as some children are getting quite soggy feet during PE.

We are beginning to collect items for sculpture week.

Each child will need a plastic 2l bottle. Please bring more than one if you can.

We are also collecting newspapers.

Please bring them in by Friday 21st October.

Year 5 Homework

All homework will be set on a Friday and must be completed by the following Thursday. 

 

English:

-The children should be reading at home for 20 minutes each day. Please ensure all reading is recorded in the Reading Record (they can do this independently).

 

-There will be a Reading Comprehension Task set for the children on Google Classrooms each week. You will need to use the answer sheet provided (on Google Classrooms) to self-mark your answers. 

 

Maths: 

-There will be a set of 18 fluency based questions set on Google Classrooms each week. These link to skills they have been working on in class during the week.

You will need to use the answer sheet provided (on Google Classrooms) to self-mark your answers. 

 

If you have any trouble with this homework please speak to your child's class teacher.

 

If you would like an additional (optional) activity, your child can access: 

-Times tables Rockstars – supplementary homework.

 

Spelling: 

Please practise the words from Patient Potter on app.sirlinkalot.com

If your child requires different words, the class teacher will write these in their reading record book. We will have regular informal checks to ensure the children are able to spell the words.

Year 5 homework - Extract from Homework Policy

 

English

Children should aim to read for 20 minutes every day and make a record in their reading record book.  Children will be given a list of 10 spellings to learn, which will be taken from the National Curriculum and will be set on Purple Mash.  There will be a half termly spelling test.

 

Children will be set a piece of English each week and this will focus on comprehension.

 

Mathematics

A fluency sheet will be set each week on google classroom. Most children will be expected to recall and use multiplication and division facts for tables up to 12 x 12.

**Based on feedback, the Year 5 Homework has changed format slightly.**

 

Please see description below:

 

Maths: Quiz set on Google Classrooms containing 15 questions relating to children's current and previous learning. The children's answers will be marked automatically on the Quiz. 

 

Reading: Will now be printed and provided to the children. Reading homework will be completed on paper and then handed in on Thursdays. The children will self-mark their answers in class. 

 

Spelling: Set on Purple Mash. Children will need to complete 10 spellings on Purple Mash Quiz.

 

If your child is finding a specific question challenging, please encourage them to leave it blank and speak to their class teacher.
