Week Beginning 11th September 2023

Welcome to Year 5. We've had a wonderful start to year 5 and have enjoyed getting to know each other in our groups.

Maths

We are going to be working on place value with numbers to 10000, numbers to 100000, numbers to 1000000 and read and write numbers to 1000000.

English

This week we are  beginning to learn our new persuasive text and will be looking at letters and writing some letters.

Reading

We will continue to read our new text The Wolves of Willoughby Chase and using skills of retrieval and how the author creates impressions for the reader.

COMPUTING

We will be learning about Internet safety.

SCIENCE

We are learning about the properties of materials and comparing their uses.

ART

We are going to learn about the artist William Morris and begin to look at his work.

PSHE

We are focusing upon the theme of Being in my world.

Music

We will be introduced to the Ukelele and how to hold it. We will be reading chords

reading tablature and will play in ensemble.

PE

We will be working on the football skill of turning the ball.

Maths

We will be continuing to work on measurement. Converting measurements

This week we are  going to begin to plan and write biographies using the language we have focused on.

Reading

We will complete our whole class reading book, The Boy Who Swam With Piranhas.

COMPUTING

We will continue to use 2calculate to create spreadsheets.

SCIENCE

We will be conducting an investigation and also looking at Day and Night.

D.T

We will complete our DT models with a cam mechanism and evaluate our work.

ART

We are going to produce some artwork inspired by the work of Vincent Van Gogh and his Starry night painting.

PSHE

We are continuing our topic of relationships and will be focusing on looking ahead to the future.

Music

We will be performing our end of year assembly 5E/5F on Monday at 9.40am, 5F/5MR Tuesday at 9.40am. Please ensure that you are wearing your school uniform.

Enterprise Week

This week is Enterprise week. We will be working on the production and advertising of our product this week. Our popcorn will be on sale on Thursday after school for £1 a bag.

We will be completing a persuasive writing unit based on writing a non-chronological report. This will link to our topic on Industrial Britain.

Reading

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase is getting really exciting now and we will be exploring more vocabulary, using intonation and expression in our reading and using inference skills.

We will also be examining an extract from The Walrus and the Carpenter.

Science

We will continue to carry out investigations linked to our topic of properties of materials and complete an activity to check our learning at the end of this unit of work.

We are continuing to study The Highwayman and will be changing aspects of it to create our own poetry using similes, metaphor, alliteration, personification and onomatopoeia.

Reading

We are continuing to read The Wolves of Willoughby Chase. We will be using our skills of retrieval, looking at fact and opinion and examining the impressions the author creates of the characters. We will also be studying an extract from a non fiction Titanic book.

Science

Properties of materials

We will carry out investigates relating to solutions and everyday materials.

We will be learning about health, disease and medicine, Culture and pastimes and exploration and empire.

We are writing poetry based on The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes We will explore the poem and the language used by the poet in order to help us create our own poems.

Well done to our Year 5 children for settling back well into school life and working so hard during our first full week back at school.

Maths

We are continuing to work on place value. We will be comparing and ordering numbers to 1000000, rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000, round within 100000 and assessing our understanding of place value.

  Writing

  We are going to be innovating our model text (linked to our topic) using our toolkit of modal verbs, imperative          verbs, alliteration, powerful adjectives, rhetorical questions and slogans.

Reading

We are continuing to read the Wolves of Willoughby Chase and will be exploring the vocabulary in the text, ordering events and working on our inference skills.

During our extract lesson we will be looking at the bool Wonder by RJ Palacio.

We will continue to get to know you through our PSHE lessons and continue to develop the Zones of regulation in class.

We are working on place value. We will be learning about the power of 10, 10/100/1000/10000,100000 more or less, partition numbers to 1,000000, using number lines to 1000,000 and comparing and ordering numbers to 1000000.

Writing

We are working on persuasive writing and will be learning about imperative verbs, using persuasive language in our sentences and will begin to plan a persuasive piece of writing.

Reading

We are reading The Wolves of Willoughby Chase . We will be practising our skills of retrieval and looking at how the chosen language forms our impressions of characters and events.

We will also be reading an extract about Cesar Chevaz.

Our topic is Industrial Britain and this week we will be looking at the artwork of William Morris and creating some print work in his style.

Topic: This week we will be completing Enterprise activities. These will be based on Budgeting, market research, designing and making. Our final product will be a bag that will be sold on Wednesday.

Our trip to Herstmonceux will take place on Monday 11th July 2022.

Juniors Sports Day Thursday 26th May 2022

All parents and carers please join us for a fun filled sports day!

Location: Earlswood Junior School Field

Time: 12.35-14.45

There will be a picnic lunch starting at 11.40 to 12.20 beforehand if you wish to join your child for lunch.

The entrance for parents and carers will be via the top main entrance for the junior site. You will be asked to sign in when you arrive at the gate and if you are unsure there will be members of staff to help direct you to the activity your child will be starting on first. Please be patient, we will aim to sign you in as quickly as possible.

As much enthusiasm and encouragement not only for your child but the whole colour team would be fantastic!

Maths: This week we will be continuing our Multiplication and Division topic. We will be looking at multiplying and dividing given numbers by 10, 100 or 1,000 and Prime numbers.

 

Writing: This week we will be continuing with our new unit based on Settings. We will planning our own made up worlds and then using these to create our own setting descriptions. 

 

Reading: This week we will be beginning our new book: 'Have Sword, Will Travel' by Garth Nix and Sean Williams and will be looking at a range of skills including inference, retrieval and character description.

 

Topic: This week we will be beginning to look at the Plague and how it spread across the world. We will be using maps to identify countries most effected and explore why trade routes cause a lot of the spread. 

 

PSHE:  This week we will be beginning our new topic: Celebrating Differences. We will be learning about direct and indirect bullying and will be looking at Children in Need and what we can do as a community.

Week Beginning 15.11.21

 

Maths: This week we will be continuing our Multiplication and Division topic. We will be looking at multiplying and dividing given numbers by 10, 100 or 1,000.

 

Writing: This week we will be continuing with our new unit based on Settings. We will be using the skills we have learnt to evaluate how and why authors use these devises in writing and will then be creating our own innovated versions of a setting description. 

 

Reading: This week we will be beginning our new book: 'Have Sword, Will Travel' by Garth Nix and Sean Williams and will be looking at a range of skills including Inference, prediction and retrieval. 

 

Topic: This week we will be starting to look at our own Arial tramways for DT. We will be learning all about pulleys and gears, labelling diagrams and creating our own versions of pulleys and gears. 

 

PSHE:  This week we will be beginning our new topic: Celebrating Differences. We will be learning about what bullying is and how to deal with it.

Week Beginning 8.11.21

 

Maths: This week we will be continuing our Multiplication and Division topic. We will be looking at squared and cubes numbers and will be multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000.  

 

Writing: This week we will be continuing with our new unit based on Settings. We will be continuing to learn our model text 'The Caravan' and will be focusing on short burst writing and changing the atmosphere. 

 

Reading: This week we will be beginning our new book: 'Have Sword, Will Travel' by Garth Nix and Sean Williams and will be looking at a range of skills including vocabulary, impressions and retrieval. 

 

Topic: This week we will be conducting a number of scientific experiments relating to properties of materials. We will be investigating how materials dissolve, reversible and irreversible changes and absorbency. 

 

PSHE:  This week we will be beginning our new topic: Celebrating Differences. We will be exploring the different cultures within our community and discussing how to tackle racism.

Topic: This week is Sculpture week. We will be learning all about the famous work of Dale Chihuly and then creating our own sculptures inspired by his designs.

Maths: This week we will be continuing with our new topic that focuses on Statistics. We will be looking at and plotting timetables and drawing line graphs.

 

Writing: This week we will be continuing our new topic which focuses on Information Writing. We will be writing inventing our own animals and then creating a Non-Chronological Report based on them. We will think about their appearance, habitat, diet and special features and will use the skills from our toolkit.

 

Reading: This week we will be continuing to read our book 'The Wolves of Willoughby Chase' by Joan Aiken and will be creating our own book reviews. 

 

Topic: This week we will looking at 4 and 6 figure grid references during our Geography sessions and will be looking at plotting and drawing our own maps of the local area. 

 

PSHE:  This week we will be learning about how democracy and having a voice benefit our school community and how collaboration can make our community better.

Topic: This week we will be focusing on our Geography skills and will be looking at some of the major changes bought about by the industrial revolution. We will be comparing the human geography of towns. 

 

PSHE:  This week we will be thinking about our impact on our communities and how our behaviour can impact others.

Maths: This week we will be continuing to look at Addition and Subtraction. We will be using both formal written methods (column) and mental strategies as well as looking at the Inverse relationship between them.

 

Writing: This week we will be beginning our now topic which focuses on Information Writing. We will be learning our new model text 'Rhiswanozebtah' and picking out grammar features such as generalisers and subordinating conjunctions.

 

Reading: This week we will be continuing to read our book 'The Wolves of Willoughby Chase' by Joan Aiken and will be focusing on our impressions and retrieval. 

 

Topic: This week we will be looking at the differences between Victorian Britain and Modern Britain. We will also be beginning to work on our map skills. 

 

PSHE:  This week is 'Feel Good Week' and we will be thinking about what makes us happy and how we can work together to create a more positive world.

Reading: This week we will be continuing to read our book 'The Wolves of Willoughby Chase' by Joan Aiken and will be focusing on vocabulary and character.

 

Topic: This week we will be looking at the lives of Victorian children and using historical sources to identify the similarities and differences between the social classes.

 

PSHE:  This week we will be thinking about different behaviours and how rewards and consequences can help to create a better community.

Reading: This week we will be continuing to read our book 'The Wolves of Willoughby Chase' by Joan Aiken and will be focusing on inference.

 

Topic: This week we will be looking at the life of Queen Victoria and how her rule lead to significant changes in British history.

Welcome to Year 5!

We are really excited to welcome you all back into school and into Year 5. We are looking forward to getting to know you all over the next few weeks.

PSHE: We will be thinking about the new year ahead of us and discussing any worries/ things they are looking forward to. We will then be setting our goals for this year and thinking about how we will achieve them. 

 

Maths: We will be completing some Place Value Investigations this week. 

 

Writing: We will be starting to look at Character this week. We will be writing our own paragraphs based on famous book characters. 

 

ART: We are looking at the artist Frank Bowling and creating our own versions of his work- you will have received an additional e-mail about this. 

 

PBL: We will be beginning to look at our topic of Victorians. We will be thinking about what life was like for the different social classes and will be using some drama based activities.
