Week beginning 9th March 2026

Trips

On Thursday 12th 5E are going on their trip to Kew Gardens. Please check the letter sent out for details.

Maths

We will be learning about percentages, percentages as fractions and finding equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages.

Writing

We are going to plan and write an independent wishing tale which will focus on the opening and ending. 

Reading

We are going to continue to read The Explorer by Katherine Rundell and focus on vocabulary, summarising the text and inference.

Science

STEM week activities. We are focusing on water resistance and will be testing different boats. We have a visitor in school who will talk to us about boats and carry out some investigations with us. 

PSHE

Our new unit is Healthy me and we will talk about first aid and how we can help someone in an emergency situation.

Geography

We will compare Rio de Janeiro with Newcastle.

PE

We are focusing on tag rugby and gymnastics.

Music

We are making music using found sounds in our environment. 

Week beginning 2nd March 2026

Maths

We will be learning about thousandths on a place value chart, we will order and compare decimals, order and round up decimals to 3 decimal places, round to the nearest whole number and round to one decimal place.

Writing

We are going to explore the language used in our model text (wishing tale), plan an innovated version of the text and will begin to write our adapted version. We also have a poetry writing session on World Book Day.

Reading

We are going to continue to read The Explorer by Katherine Rundell and focus on inference and the vocabulary the author has used. We will be pairing with our Year 2 buddies for World Book Day.

Science

We will continue our unit on forces and will focus on gravity this week.

PSHE

Our new unit is Healthy me and we will begin by looking at the impact of alcohol on our health.

Geography

We will compare the Amazon rainforest with Sherwood Forest in the United Kingdom.

RE

Our topic is Christianity and we will continue the theme of salvation and rescue.

PE

We are focusing on tag rugby and gymnastics.

 

Week beginning 23rd February 2026

Maths

We will assess our learning from this term and will also work with thousandths as fractions and decimals.

Writing

We are going to learn a wishing tale and will work on developing powerful vocabulary, contrasting conjunctions, adverbs of frequency and will create a short piece of writing.

Reading

We are going to continue to read The Explorer by Katherine Rundell.

Science

We will begin our unit on forces and will begin by revisiting our prior knowledge.

PSHE

Our new unit is Healthy me and we will begin by looking at the impact of smoking on our well.

Geography

We will focus on a country study of Brazil.

RE

Our topic is Christianity and the focus this week is salvation.

PE

We are focusing on rugby.

Outdoor Learning

We are planning to go outside for outside learning. Please ensure your child has wellies and a coat.

Week beginning 9th February 2026

Maths

We will assess our learning of fractions and then work on decimals to 2 decimal places, we will compare equivalent fractions and decimals with tenths and hundreths.

Writing

We are going to use the tools we have focused on to support us when planning and writing a discussion text.

Reading

We are going to continue to read The Explorer by Katherine Rundell and will be working on retrieval, inference and true or false questions.

Science

We will review our learning and complete an end of unit assessment.

PSHE

This half term is Mental Health Week. On Wednesday, children are invited to wear their own clothes including an item of clothing which is their house colour (this might be their PE shirt).

Geography

This week we will focus on the human and physical features of South America.

Computing

This week is Safer Internet week. The children will attend a Safer Internet session in school.

RE

Our topic is Judaism and the focus this week is Tzedekah (charity).

PE

We are focusing on hockey skills and dance.

We will be finding fractions of amounts, finding the whole and looking at fractions as operators.

We are going to continue to read The Explorer by Katherine Rundell and will be working on retrieval, inference and will explore some of the new vocabulary.

Science

We will continue our investigation relating to the life cycles of two living things.

PSHE

This half term we will explore Dreams and goals. We will think about the dreams and goals of people from different cultures. Are they different to ours? We will also think about how we can help other people who are less fortunate than ourselves.

Geography

We will continue to learn about biomes and explore the vegetation belt of a rainforest.

Computing

We are going to use the microbits to create a magic eight ball.

Our topic is Judaism and we will look at how observing Yom Kippur might change Jewish people.

We are going to continue to read The Explorer by Katherine Rundell and will be working on retrieval and reading with fluency.

Welcome back. We are looking forward to an exciting term, learning all about Rainforests.

Maths

We are going to continue with multiplication, multiplying 2, 3 and 4 digit numbers using the written method. At the end of the week we will move onto division.

Writing

Our fiction unit is a suspense writing unit. We are going to learn our model text and develop suspense by describing using the senses, using personification to hint at danger, use the rule of three to develop the action and show the feelings of the characters.

Reading

We are going to begin our new text The Explorer by Katherine Rundell. 

Science

We are going to be naming the parts of a flowering plant.

PSHE

This half term we will explore Dreams and goals. We will consider what we would like our future to be like and how we will achieve our goals.

We have had a wonderful start to the new school year in year  and are now looking forward to our first week of learning.

Maths

This week we are working with numbers to 10000, 100000, 1,000,000, and powers of 10. We will be able to read and write these numbers.

Writing

Our focus this week is to learn a new model text for our fiction unit, write rule of three sentences which will describe actions in a setting, use personification, figurative language  develop our sentences to create atmosphere in our fiction writing.

Reading

We are continuing to read our new book, The Boy Who Swam With Piranhas and will be working on our intonation and expression when reading aloud. We will demonstrate our understanding of the text by retrieving answers from the chapter we read. We are also looking at an extract from a different text.

PSHE

Our unit is Being in my world and this week we are looking forward to the year ahead.

We are going to start our Anglo Saxons topic by recapping what happened before the Anglo Saxons arrived and find out why they came.
