Week Beginning 28.11.22

Maths

We are continuing to work with fractions. We will be adding fractions. For a recap on fractions please click here.

English

We will begin to learn an explanation text and learn the features and skills needed to write our own great explanation text.

Reading

We are continuing to read Have Sword Will Travel and will be using our skills of prediction and retrieval.

Science

We will complete our unit and find out what we now know about Properties and materials.

PSHE

Our work on anti-bullying will continue with a focus on different types of bullying.

Week Beginning 21.11.22

Maths

We are continuing to work with fractions. We will be comparing and ordering fractions, adding and subtracting fractions and add fractions within 1.

English

We will be completing our unit on writing a warning tale and will be writing our independent pieces using the skills from our toolkit.

Reading

We are continuing to read Have Sword Will Travel and will be finding evidence in the text which forms our impressions of the characters.

Science

As part of our properties of materials unit we will investigate the stickiest tape and present our findings.

PSHE

We will explore name calling and spreading rumours as part of our anti bullying work.

Maths

Our work on Fractions this week will focus upon changing mixed to improper fractions, ordering fractions and comparing fractions less than 1.

English

We will begin to innovate our model text and create our own versions based on the original Caravan text.

Reading

We are continuing to read Have Sword Will Travel and will work on our intonation, the impressions that the author creates and inference. We will also look at an extract from The Hobbit.

Science

We will be exploring absorbency.

History

We will be looking at how and why people travelled during the middle ages and how the plague affected their lives.

PSHE

We will be looking at anti-bullying.

Maths

We will be continuing to work on fractions.  We will be converting improper fractions to mixed fractions.

English

We will begin to work on a warning tale called the caravan. We will be continuing to use figurative language to create atmosphere in our settings, use apostrophes and unpick our model text so that we understand the skills which have been used.

Reading

We are continuing our book called Have Sword Will Travel by Gareth Nix. 

Science

We will continuing to learn about the properties of materials and investigating dissolving.

History

We are beginning to learn about The Plague.

PE

We are learning netball skills and playing small team games.

PSHE

Maths

We will be working on fractions. We will be finding fractions equivalent to a unit and non-unit fraction, recognising equivalent fractions and converting improper fractions to mixed numbers.

English

We will begin to work on a warning tale called the caravan. We will be using figurative language and the power of 3. 

Reading

We are starting a new book called Have Sword Will Travel by Gareth Nix. 

PSHE

Reviewing how the zones of regulation are working in class and thinking of further tools to help us.

Sculpture Week

We will be completing our Sculpture week activities. Have you brought in your empty 2litre plastic bottle.

Maths

We will be working on multiplication and squared and cubed numbers. We will also be multiplying and dividing numbers by 10, 100 and 1000.

English

We are continuing to work on our non fiction writing and will be writing our own independent piece.

Reading

We are getting to the end of The Wolves of WIlloughby Chase. We are continuing to use our reading skills to unpick the text and we can't wait to find out what happens to Sylvia and Bonnie.

Geography

We will be using grid references to read maps

We will complete our kite making and evaluate our results.

Week Beginning 10/10/22

Maths

We will begin a unit of work on statistics. This will include; Common multiples, Factors, Common factors, Prime numbers, and square numbers.

English

We will be completing a persuasive writing unit based on writing a non-chronological report. This will link to our topic on Industrial Britain.

Reading

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase is getting really exciting now and we will be exploring more vocabulary, using intonation and expression in our reading and using inference skills.

We will also be examining an extract from The Walrus and the Carpenter.

Science

We will continue to carry out investigations linked to our topic of properties of materials and complete an activity to check our learning at the end of this unit of work.

Topic

We will complete our history unit of work.

DT

We will be designing and making kites.

Computing

We will be working together to find strategies in order to solve friendship difficulties.

We are continuing our work on number, addition and subtraction. We will work on Multi-step addition and subtraction problems,  Compare calculations, Finding missing numbers. 

Writing

We are continuing to study The Highwayman and will be changing aspects of it to create our own poetry using similes, metaphor, alliteration, personification and onomatopoeia.

Reading

We are continuing to read The Wolves of Willoughby Chase. We will be using our skills of retrieval, looking at fact and opinion and examining the impressions the author creates of the characters. We will also be studying an extract from a non fiction Titanic book.

Science

Properties of materials

We will carry out investigates relating to solutions and everyday materials.

Topic

We will be learning about health, disease and medicine, Culture and pastimes and exploration and empire.

Computing

Internet safety.

PSHE

We will look at how we work together as a group.

We will be cooking this week and bringing our dish home to eat. Please ensure that the dietary information held by the office is up to date.

Week Beginning 26/09/2022

Maths

We are beginning a new unit of work on addition and subtraction. We will focus on mental strategies, adding whole numbers with more than 4 digits, subtracting whole numbers with more than 4 digits, round to check numbers and using inverse operations.

Writing

We are writing poetry based on The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes We will explore the poem and the language used by the poet in order to help us create our own poems.

Reading

We are continuing to read The Wolves of Willoughby Chase. We will explore some of the traits of the main characters, vocabulary and answers some comprehension questions to check understanding of the text.

Can your child tell you what has happened in the story so far?

We will also be reading an Extract from the book The Clockwork Crow.

Science

Properties of materials

We will continue to learn about dissolving and irreversible changes.

We will be learning about the industrial revolution, Queen Victoria and Victorian inventions.

Week Beginning  20.09.22

 

Well done to our Year 5 children for settling back well into school life and working so hard during our first full week back at school.

Maths

We are continuing to work on place value. We will be comparing and ordering numbers to 1000000, rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000, round within 100000 and assessing our understanding of place value.

  Writing

  We are going to be innovating our model text (linked to our topic) using our toolkit of modal verbs, imperative          verbs, alliteration, powerful adjectives, rhetorical questions and slogans.

Reading

We are continuing to read the Wolves of Willoughby Chase and will be exploring the vocabulary in the text, ordering events and working on our inference skills.

During our extract lesson we will be looking at the bool Wonder by RJ Palacio.

Science

We are learning about the properties of materials. We will investigate materials, dissolving and thermal insulators.

Topic

We are continuing to study the work of William Morris in art and will complete our prints inspired by his style and techniques. 

Geography/Woodlands

We are continuing our map work and will use our knowledge of degree angles to find compass points.

Computing/Internet safety

We will looking at scamming.

Spellings

We are learning the words on the Patient Potter list of Sir Linkalot.

Week Beginning 12.09.22

 

We will continue to get to know you through our PSHE lessons and continue to develop the Zones of regulation in class.

 

Maths

We are working on place value. We will be learning about the power of 10, 10/100/1000/10000,100000 more or less, partition numbers to 1,000000, using number lines to 1000,000 and comparing and ordering numbers to 1000000.

Writing

We are working on persuasive writing and will be learning about imperative verbs, using persuasive language in our sentences and will begin to plan a persuasive piece of writing.

Reading

We are reading The Wolves of Willoughby Chase . We will be practising our skills of retrieval and looking at how the chosen language forms our impressions of characters and events.

We will also be reading an extract about Cesar Chevaz.

Topic

Our topic is Industrial Britain and this week we will be looking at the artwork of William Morris and creating some print work in his style.

Messages

Our PE days are on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please send your child into school in their PE kit on these days.

 

Your child will be choosing a reading book or as free readers are welcome to read a book from home. Please encourage them to read daily and record their progress in their reading record book.

We will be selling our Enterprise week bags from 3:10pm on Wednesday 20th July 2022. 

Our class assemblies have been moved to Friday 22nd July 2022. 

 

Here is a break down of this week:

 

Maths: This week we will be looking at volume, comparing volume, estimating volume and then estimating capacity. 

 

Writing: This week we will be continuing with our new Non-fiction topic based on Biographies. We will be inventing our own scientist, who has discovered a new planet, and we will be writing a biography about their lives and achievements. 

 

Topic: This week we will be completing Enterprise activities. These will be based on Budgeting, market research, designing and making. Our final product will be a bag that will be sold on Wednesday.

 

PSHE: We will continuing our topic based on 'Changing Me'. We will be thinking about looking ahead into the next year at school and what we'd like to achieve. 

 

Week Beginning 11.7.22

 

Our trip to Herstmonceux will take place on Monday 11th July 2022.

Children will need to be in school at 8:30am, ready to leave at 9am. Children will need to bring a water bottle, lunchbox and bag with them. It is due to be very hot, so please ensure that your child has applied sunscreen before school.

 

This week is the beginning of our Enterprise Week. Please can each child bring in an old T-shirt.

Maths: This week we will be looking at Measurement. We will be looking at metric units of measure, imperial units of measure, time and timetables.

 

Writing: This week we will be continuing with our new Non-fiction topic based on Biographies. We will be looking at our new model text based on Katherine Johnson and will be looking at the grammar skills used within it. After that, we will be thinking about the text as authors before planning our own.

 

Reading: This week we will be continuing to read our new book: Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce. We will be looking at vocabulary, summarising, retrieval and character.

 

Topic: This week we will continuing our new topic based on Space! We will be looking at the moon and how it can control the ocean tides.

 

PSHE: We will continuing our topic based on 'Changing Me'. We will be exploring conception and how it can lead to new life.

Maths: This week we will be looking at Measurement. We will be looking at Reflection, Millimetres and Millilitres, Kilograms and Kilometres and Metric units.

 

Writing: This week we will finishing off our own quest tales that involve dialogue. After that, we will be beginning our new Non-fiction topic based on Biographies. We will be looking at our new model text based on Katherine Johnson and picking out the key skills and structure. 

 

Reading: This week we will be continuing to read our new book: Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce. We will be looking at vocabulary, summarising, retrieval and character.

 

Topic: This week we will continuing our new topic based on Space! We will be looking at the moon and how it can control the ocean tides.

 

PSHE: We will continuing our topic based on 'Changing Me'. We will be exploring the male reproductive system and will be talking about how males experience puberty.

Here is a break down of this week:

 

Maths: This week we will be looking at position and direction. We will be focusing on Translation, Translation with coordinates, Lines of Symmetry, Reflection and Reflection with coordinates.  

 

Writing: This week we will continuing our new topic based on a discussion text. We will be writing our own versions of the model text from the 'aliens' point of view. We will be using the toolkit and structure of the model text to help us. 

 

Reading: This week we will be continuing to read our new book: Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce. We will be looking at vocabulary, summarising, retrieval and character.

 

Topic: This week we will continuing our new topic based on Space! We will be looking at the craters on the moon and will be conducting an experiment to see if we can re-create them.

 

PSHE: We will beginning our topic based on 'Changing Me'. We will be exploring the female reproductive system and will be talking about how females experience puberty. During this lesson, we will be looking at some different sanitary products that females use.

Here is a break down of this week:

 

Maths: This week we will be calculating lengths and angles within shapes, investigating regular and irregular polygons and then reasoning about 3D shapes. 

 

Writing: This week we will continuing our new topic based on a discussion text. We will be learning the model text and will then be thinking carefully about the specific skills used by authors' and the effect that they have on the reader. 

 

Reading: This week we will be continuing to read our new book: Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce. We will be looking at ordering, prediction and true or false. Additionally, we will be looking at Mae Jemison and her fantastic impact on the world from a female influence. 

 

Topic: This week we will continuing our new topic based on Space! We will be looking at the different phases of the moon.

 

PSHE: We will beginning our topic based on 'Changing Me'. We will be exploring self-esteem and body image.

Year 5 & 6

Juniors Sports Day Thursday 26th May 2022

All parents and carers please join us for a fun filled sports day!

Location: Earlswood Junior School Field

Time: 12.35-14.45

There will be a picnic lunch starting at 11.40 to 12.20 beforehand if you wish to join your child for lunch.

The entrance for parents and carers will be via the top main entrance for the junior site. You will be asked to sign in when you arrive at the gate and if you are unsure there will be members of staff to help direct you to the activity your child will be starting on first. Please be patient, we will aim to sign you in as quickly as possible.

As much enthusiasm and encouragement not only for your child but the whole colour team would be fantastic!

See you there on what will hopefully be a bright and sunny day!

Maths: This week we will be looking at angles and measurement. We will be drawing lines and angles accurately, calculating angles of straight lines, calculating angles around a point, identifying angles within Triangles and angles within Quadrilaterals. 

 

Writing: This week we will innovating on the poem we have been learning-The Highway Man. We will be creating our own narrative poem based on a journey. We will use the toolkit to help us. 

 

Reading: This week we will be continuing with our new book 'Viking Boy' by Tony Bradman and will be looking at inference, retrieval and vocabulary.

 

Topic: This week we will learning about Viking trade and Longboats as well as Crime and Punishment. This week is sports week and we will be playing a Kwik Cricket within the year group on Monday. We will also be celebrating the Jubilee on Friday. 

 

PSHE:  This week we will be starting our new PSHE theme of 'Relationships' and will be focusing on our relationships with technology.

We will be looking at adding and subtracting decimals with different decimal places, problem solving with decimals with different decimal places, adding and subtracting wholes and decimals, decimal sequences and multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100 and 1000.

 

Writing: This week we will finishing our Defeating the Monster Tale. We will be creating our own tale using the toolkit and structure we have learnt. 

 

Reading: This week we will be continuing with our new book 'Viking Boy' by Tony Bradman and will be looking at retrieval, impressions and comparing and contrasting character.

 

Topic: This week we will be starting our new topic: Viking and Anglo-Saxons. We will be looking at a famous Anglo-Saxon burial site-Sutton Hoo and will then be learning about how the Viking raids affected the Anglo-Saxons at Lindisfarne.

Writing: This week we will continue with our Defeating the Monster Tale: Beowulf. This is a traditional Nordic tale about a great warrior defeating a beast and saving the kingdom. We will be innovating the text to create our own versions from the view of a different character and will then be planning our own defeating the monster tale.

 

Reading: This week we will be starting our new book 'Viking Boy' by Tony Bradman and will be looking at inference, summarising and author's choice. 

 

Topic: This week we will be starting our new topic: Viking and Anglo-Saxons. We will be looking at Anglo-Saxons daily life, settlement and religion.

Maths: This week we will be continuing to look at decimals. We will be looking at the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages, adding decimals within 1, subtracting decimals within 1 and then thinking about decimals compliments to 1.

 

Writing: This week we will continue with our new Defeating the Monster Tale: Beowulf. This is a traditional Nordic tale about a great warrior defeating a beast and saving the kingdom. We will be learning our model text and picking out key skills before analysing the author's use of grammar skills. 

 

Reading: This week we will be starting our new book 'Viking Boy' by Tony Bradman and will be looking at inference, ordering, true or false, summarising and vocabulary.

 

Topic: This week we will be starting our new topic: Viking and Anglo-Saxons. We will be looking at Anglo-Saxons and why they made the journey to Britain.

Writing: This week we will begin our new Defeating the Monster Tale: Beowulf. This is a traditional Nordic tale about a great warrior defeating a beast and saving the kingdom. We will be learning our model text and picking out key skills. 

 

Reading: This week we will be starting our new book 'Viking Boy' by Tony Bradman and will be looking at vocabulary, character and inference. 

 

Topic: This week we will be starting our new topic: Viking and Anglo-Saxons. We will be looking at Anglo-Saxons and why they made the journey to Britain.

Week Beginning 21.3.22

 

Maths: This week we will be continuing to look at Fractions. We will be multiplying mixed number fractions by integers for 2 days, we will then be looking at fractions of different amounts and finally, fractions as operators. 

 

Writing: This week we will be continuing with our non-fiction topic based on a discussion text. We will be learning key skills such as subordinating conjunctions, adverbials and different clauses before analysing author's use of these skills within the model text.

 

Reading: This week we will be continuing with our new book: ' The Explorer'  by Katherine Rundell and will be looking at a range of skills including vocabulary, summarising and author's choice. 

 

Topic: This week we have a Computing focus and will be continuing to look at Coding. We will be using Code for Life to create different algorithms to make the vehicle move in different directions and will be building upon a range of skills including, repeating and debugging code.

 

PSHE:  This week we will be continuing our topic: Healthy Me. We will be looking body image and discussing how external influences can affect us. We will then also be looking at how to improve our body-image.

Week Beginning 14.3.22

 

Maths: This week we will be continuing to look at Fractions. We will be multiplying fractions by integers and will be breaking the whole.

 

Writing: This week we will be beginning our non-fiction topic based on a discussion text. We will be learning our new model text and will be picking out key skills used by the author. 

 

Reading: This week we will be continuing with our new book: ' The Explorer'  by Katherine Rundell and will be looking at a range of skills vocabulary, summarising and character traits. 

 

Topic: This week we have a Computing focus and will be beginning to look at Coding. We will be using different software to program a set of instructions and debut (correct) any errors in the code.

 

PSHE:  This week we will be continuing our topic: Healthy Me. We will be looking at Frist Aid and how to keep ourselves and others safe.

Maths: This week we will be looking at subtracting fractions with different denominators and subtracting mixed number fractions. 

 

Writing: This week we will be writing our own version of a suspense tale based within the Rainforest.  We will be using the model text structure and our toolkit to create suspense. 

 

Reading: This week we will be continuing with our new book: ' The Explorer'  by Katherine Rundell and will be looking at a range of skills including inference and retrieval. 

 

Topic: We will be continuing with our Rainforests topic. We will be looking at and comparing the Tropical Rainforest Biome with the Temperate Deciduous Biome. We will specifically be focusing on the Amazon Rainforest and Sheerwood Forest. 

 

PSHE:  This week we will be continuing our topic: Healthy Me. We will be celebrating different female figures for International Woman's Day.

Week Beginning 28.2.22

 

Maths: This week we will be looking at adding and subtracting fractions. We will be adding mixed number fractions and fractions with different denominators. We will then look at subtracting fractions with different denominators. 

 

Writing: This week we will be beginning to learn about our new topic based on suspense. We will be using the model text and toolkit to innovate our own versions of a suspense tale. 

 

Reading: This week we will be continuing with our new book: ' The Explorer'  by Katherine Rundell and will be looking at a range of skills including character traits, prediction and summarising. 

 

Topic: We will be continuing with our Rainforests topic. We will be looking at deforestation and the devastating effects it can have on the rainforest biome. 

 

PSHE:  This week we will be continuing our topic: Healthy Me. We will be looking at the affects of alcohol on the body and being confident with say no to peer pressure.

Maths: This week we will be looking at number sequences at the beginning of the week, and then comparing and ordering fractions greater than 1 towards end of the week using the knowledge we revised last week.

 

Writing: This week we will be continuing our persuasive text. We will innovating on our model text, 'Alton Towers' and then planning our own persuasive text using the toolkit.

 

Reading: This week we will be continuing with our new book: ' The Explorer'  by Katherine Rundell and will be looking at a range of skills including retrieval, impressions, inference and vocabulary.

 

Topic: This week we will be beginning our new topic: 'Rainforests'. We will be looking at the People of the Rainforest and Deforestation.

Maths: This week we will be comparing and ordering fractions at the beginning of the week, and then converting improper to mixed fraction towards the end of the week using the knowledge we revised last week.

 

Writing: This week we will starting with our new topic based on a persuasive text. We will be focusing on the structure of non-fiction writing and will be beginning to learn about imperative verbs and emotive language as well as learning our new model text: Alton Towers

 

Reading: This week we will be continuing with our new book: 'The Boy Who Swam With Piranhas'  by David Almond and will be looking at a range of skills including retrieval, impressions, inference and vocabulary.

 

Topic: This week we will be beginning our new topic: 'Rainforests'. We will be looking at the different Layers of the Rainforest and will be looking into the different animals that live within them.

 

PSHE:  This week we will be continuing our new topic: Dreams and Goals. We will be thinking about our ideal job and the different stereotypes surrounding different job roles.

Topic: This week we will be beginning our new topic: 'Rainforests'. We will be looking at the different Biomes and Climate zones around the world and will be comparing and contrasting these, using Atlases to support us.

 

PSHE:  This week we will be continuing our new topic: Dreams and Goals. We will be looking at other cultures and the dreams and goals of children from other countries and comparing them to our own.

Maths: This week we will be continuing with our topic of Multiplication. We will be looking at formal methods to help us multiply a 4 digit number by a 2 digit number. We will also be beginning to look at Division this week and will be using 'Bus Stop' method to help us divide up to a 4 digit number by a 1 digit number.

 

Writing: This week we will beginning our new topic based on a wishing tale. We will innovating on our model text, 'The Man Who Walked Between The Towers' and then planning our own wishing tales using the toolkit.

Reading: This week we will be beginning our new book: 'The Boy Who Swam With Piranhas'  by David Almond and will be looking at a range of skills including summarising, retrieval and inference.

 

Topic: This week we will be looking at artist Edvard Munch and recreating our own versions of his famous work, 'The Scream'.

Topic: This week we will be looking at how the Plague affected people of different classes in the 13 and 1600s.

Topic: This week we will be beginning to look at the Plague and how it spread across the world. We will be using maps to identify countries most effected and explore why trade routes cause a lot of the spread.

Topic: This week we will be starting to look at our own Arial tramways for DT. We will be learning all about pulleys and gears, labelling diagrams and creating our own versions of pulleys and gears.

We will think about their appearance, habitat, diet and special features and will use the skills from our toolkit.

 

Reading: This week we will be continuing to read our book 'The Wolves of Willoughby Chase' by Joan Aiken and will be creating our own book reviews. 

 

Topic: This week we will looking at 4 and 6 figure grid references during our Geography sessions and will be looking at plotting and drawing our own maps of the local area.

Welcome to Year 5!

We are really excited to welcome you all back into school and into Year 5. We are looking forward to getting to know you all over the next few weeks.

PSHE: We will be thinking about the new year ahead of us and discussing any worries/ things they are looking forward to. We will then be setting our goals for this year and thinking about how we will achieve them. 

 

Maths: We will be completing some Place Value Investigations this week. 

 

Writing: We will be starting to look at Character this week. We will be writing our own paragraphs based on famous book characters. 

 

ART: We are looking at the artist Frank Bowling and creating our own versions of his work- you will have received an additional e-mail about this. 

 

PBL: We will be beginning to look at our topic of Victorians. We will be thinking about what life was like for the different social classes and will be using some drama based activities.
